COLORS BRINGS HAPPINESS TO CANTON

From 17 November to 25 December 2012 the Times Museum in Canton, China, will show a selection
of Happiness and other survival techniques, an exhibition by COLORS magazine which had its world
première at the Design Museum in London in April 2012.
Inspired by the magazine’s 83rd edition Happiness, the exhibit is one of the events of The Light
of Independence, 2012 Guangzhou Independent Publication Exhibition and, through photographic
reportage and illustration, it will take the visitor on a quirky tour on plastic smiles, laughter yoga sessions
and electrodes planted in the human brain.
A chance to get young Chinese people more closely involved in the reality of a magazine that has been
talking about "the rest of the world", away from the limelight of media attention, for over twenty years.

With its 83rd issue Happiness, COLORS offers a survival guide to happiness worldwide, investigating
approaches to joy from Korea, to Mexico, to Finland, and grounding them in neuroscience and psychology
to tell you how best to get your endorphins, dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin and norepinephrine – the
chemicals in your brain which are, scientifically speaking, the only things you really enjoy.
Everyone – from the Dalai Lama to joggers in the park – spends most of his life trying to reach happiness.
In their pursuit of it, Americans spend $20 billion a year on self-help and antidepressants.
But wealth alone doesn't seem to work – people in the West are twice as rich as they were 60 years ago,
yet no more satisfied with their lives. And twenty years from now, the World Health Organization predicts
that depression will be the biggest health burden in the world. The question urgently needs answering:
what does make you happy?

The Light of Independence, 2012 Guangzhou Independent Publication Exhibition is an exhibition
exploring the various forms of independent publications and the experimental ways in which artists,
designers and publishers show their special concept in editing, image making and printing.
As part of the Community Art Festival of the Guangzhou Times Museum, the exhibition shows works
from oversea and Greater China, providing an opportunity to know various kinds of independent publications
in their different forms and contexts. Parallel activities, like cross talks, workshops and night screenings
will also take place. Independent artists, designers and publishers will come together to present
their works and discuss about the development and the future of independent publication in China and abroad.

On November 23th at 7:00 p.m. Mauro Bedoni, COLORS’ Photo Editor, and Laurence NG, the founder
of IDN magazine (which publishes the Chinese edition of COLORS), will give an overview of COLORS’
history, focusing on the idea at the base of the magazine: diversity is good.

Renowned for its innovative, eco-conscious work, the award-winning Oslo- and New York-based architectural firm Snøhetta is featured in a multi-faceted exhibition that offers insights into the design and construction of the firm’s most important works, including the celebrated Bibliotheca Alexandrina built in Alexandria, Egypt, in 2002. The iceberg-like marble-surfaced Norwegian National Opera and Ballet built in Oslo, Norway, in 2008 has already become an iconic emblem of the city.

Work is currently in progress on the National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion in New York. The exhibition includes films, photographs, drawings, models and interactive learning devices.

The exhibition is arranged by the Museum of Finnish Architecture.

William Klein/Daido Moriyama - Tate Modern


The William Klein/Daido Moriyama exhibition at Tate Modern will explore the relationship between the work of William Klein (b1928) and Daido Moriyama (b1938). With Klein being one of the 20th century's most important photographers and film-makers and Moriyama emerging from the 1960's Provoke movement in Japan, this exhibition will observe the use of film and photography in urban experience and political protest. The display will cover New York and Japan as it traces the influence of Klein's 1956 photo-book, Life is Good and Good in New York and Moriyama's Another Country in New York. Vintage photographs from New York, Tokyo and Paris will also be displayed

Who Cares? Design Cares
There is only one letter distinguishing ’cure’ and ’care’, but with healthcare costs increasing
and quality of life at stake, the impact of this one letter is huge! Design Cares about your well-being,
and showcases breakthrough solutions designed by design students to help you, your community
and your society change for the better.

Design students from Design Academy Eindhoven, Industrial Design at Eindhoven University
of Technology and Aalto University Helsinki exhibit how a strong design approach creates meaningful
solutions for personal, social and societal health and well-being. Design thinking is used to generate
holistic solutions that make a difference by creating value for end-users, care-providers and other
stakeholders.

Although each institute has a different approach towards design education, all schools think that
the human factor is increasingly missing in the current health environment. People are replaced
by technical and tectonic solutions whereas often a friendly word, a touch, or a smile is an important
part in what we need to feel better. It is in design’s understanding of the subtleties of human
interrelations that a new culture of wellbeing and health can be learned and adopted.

Architetto, scultore, pittore, geniale pensatore del suo tempo, padre della moderna urbanistica e maestro del Movimento Moderno: è Le Corbusier, dal 1920 pseudonimo di Charles-Édouard Jeanneret.
A lui il MAXXI Architettura dedica la mostra L’Italia di Le Corbusier a cura di Marida Talamona. Realizzata in partenariato con la Fondation Le Corbusier di Parigi, si avvale del supporto di un Consiglio scientifico composto da alcuni dei massimi esperti della vicenda lecorbuseriana.
Oltre 600 disegni, schizzi, acquerelli, dipinti e fotografie originali per una esposizione che, seguendo un filo cronologico e tematico, documenta le molteplici influenze che l’Italia ha avuto sulla formazione e sul lavoro del maestro: dai primi viaggi agli inizi del Novecento ai progetti, mai realizzati, per il Centro Calcolo Olivetti di Rho e per l’Ospedale di Venezia degli anni Sessanta.

“Il MAXXI Architettura – dice il Direttore Margherita Guccione - prosegue l'indagine su temi, forme e figure del XX e XXI secolo. In questo caso la scelta del rapporto tra Le Corbusier e l'Italia è una chiave di lettura che restituisce la poliedricità, molto contemporanea, della sua figura: architetto, urbanista, designer, pittore, scultore e homme de lettres ha letteralmente rivoluzionato il modo di pensare l'architettura investendo con la sua lezione l'intero pianeta."

Il percorso di mostra si snoda tra documenti diversi, testimonianze di viaggi, studi, scambi culturali e aspirazioni personali, dagli schizzi dei monumenti italiani sui carnets de voyage alla riproduzione settecentesca della pianta di Roma Antica di Pirro Ligorio della quale Le Corbusier riprodusse un frammento per illustrare la sua Leçon de Rome, dalla corrispondenza con Pier Luigi Nervi ai sei grandi fogli con disegni schizzati durante la conferenza di Milano nel giugno 1934 a documentare la complessa formazione “italiana” dell’architetto, nutrita da un’ approfondita esperienza diretta e dagli studi alla Bibliothèque Nationale di Parigi.
Un ricco apparato fotografico accompagna la mostra offrendo una lettura integrata di un Le Corbusier meno noto, nel dialogo che instaura con gli artisti e gli architetti suoi contemporanei, restituendo la completezza della sua statura intellettuale e l’eccezionalità del suo pensiero.

Imperfection is the theme of the first Istanbul Design Biennial. And there is nowhere better to explore it than in Istanbul, a city of infinite layers, charged with the vitality that comes from engaging with rapid urban, social and cultural change. Istanbul as a city, is far from perfect, yet it is one of the most exhilarating and dynamic centres in the world. Its special quality is that it makes so much from the imperfect, the inexact and the provisional. As a theme Imperfection will both celebrate Istanbul’s distinctive creative qualities, and encapsulate a wider discussion about the nature of design in the contemporary world. It will tell the world something about Istanbul, and offer the world a sharp insight into the nature of contemporary design.

As the country's leading contemporary art fair, the Frieze Art Fair is far from conventional
and there's always the possibility of stumbling across something extraordinary.
And with Frieze the world's most influential art buyers arrive in Regent's Park. Specially commissioned
art works are exhibited alongside curated exhibitions as well as the pieces for sale presented by 173 of the most highly respected contemporary art galleries in the world. Among the paintings and installations in Regent's Park there's an amazing jumble of the comical, the beautiful and the shocking. You can expect site-specific projects, short films, a prestigious talks programme and an artist-led education schedule all presented in a captivatingly chaotic atmosphere. It's packed into a vast temporary structure in the park with work by around 1,000 contemporary artists crammed in.
There's an incredible wealth of art on display - and the incredibly wealthy come to buy it. For people-watching alone, Frieze is a must for any Londoner with an acute interest in the art world. Returning once again will be Hix Oyster Bar & Restaurant, alongside numerous cafes, Gail's artisan bakery and Japanese sushi restaurant Moshi Moshi - so you'll be able to take a much-needed pit stop as you trail around the collection.

A l'occasion de son 25e anniversaire et conformément à la vocation qui est la sienne de faire connaître et de soutenir la création contemporaine, l'Institut du monde arabe a fait le choix de présenter à son public une grande exposition d'arts plastiques spécialement conçue pour cette célébration et consacrée à "Vingt-cinq ans de créativité" dans le monde arabe. Cette exposition occupera différents espaces à l'intérieur de l'IMA, ainsi que le Mobile art.

L’exposition s’emploie à donner à voir les directions principales empruntées récemment par les artistes arabes et les sources d’inspiration qui travaillent de l’intérieur un art dont les spécificités viennent peu à peu à s’imposer. Elle élabore un panorama le plus exhaustif possible des tendances et des recherches, qui, depuis vingt-cinq ans, sont parties prenantes de la création arabe contemporaine, quels que soient les médiums utilisés : peinture, sculpture, photographie, vidéo, installation.

Łódź Design Festival 2012 – 6th Edition

Once again we are going to create an open space to facilitate talks about design, the exchange of good practices and meetings with personalities. If you are looking for inspiration or if you want to meet interesting people and discover latest design trends, just come to Łódź between the 18th and 28th of October 2012.
This year’s festival will be held under the motto AWARENESS to emphasise how important awareness is in design and how many connotations and meanings it has in relation to design.
Awareness in design obliges us to ask what the role of design and the designer is.
What design can do? In a sense, design speaks less about things, and more and more about the whole processes whose creation involves entire teams, consisting not only of designers, but also experts from the fields of humanities, science and others.
Awareness tells us to look back and move forward, and above all to understand that design never exists out of context – human, historical, geographical, social. And nor does it ever exist in isolation.
Furthermore, it belongs more and more rarely to only one category – one time it is a science, the next an art.

Budapest Design Week organised for the ninth time has started with the opening of the international exhibition Slow Design. Offering over a hundred programs all around the Hungarian capital between 28th September and 7th October, the focus and the title of the design festival is Slow Design that means slowing down and filling your life with content and profundity.

The concept of Slow Design took root in the design profession a decade ago; above all it refers to a democratic and holistic approach to designing, by taking the entire life-cycle of objects into consideration, it is a responsible and conscious design practice focusing on the long-term impacts of design, it believes in sustainable development, in regionalism and cultural diversity, in local values and uniqueness.
